Flights to the Corn Islands: Travel Guide

When we first found out about the Corn Islands and saw photos, we immediately knew we had to go! However, at first glance, the journey seemed like a lot of effort!

Luckily we were wrong. It turned out that there were regular flights to the Corn Islands from Managua – the capital of Nicaragua – and we had a straightforward and stress-free journey.

Flights: Managua to Corn Islands

The only airline that provides flights to the Corn Islands is La Costena.

For the majority of people, you will need to take a flight from Managua to the Corn Islands. If you are on an international flight into Managua, you will first need to transfer to the regional/domestic terminal.

Note that you will be flying directly to Big Corn Island as Little Corn Island does not have an airport (info on how to get to Little Corn Island below).

The flight to Big Corn Island will take approximately 1.5 hours. It’s a quick journey and the views are breath-taking as you come to land. The cost is around $80 each way.

The flight times vary throughout the year. Sometimes they run three per day at 06:30, 11:30 and 14:00. In low season expect only 06:30 and 14:00. Check the latest timetables here.

Once you have arrived on Big Corn Island you can jump in a taxi and go anywhere for a set fare of just over $1 – no haggling required. English and Creole are the main two languages here so there is no need to worry about communication.

Corn Island Flights from elsewhere

La Costena also runs flights to Big Corn Island from Puerto Cabezas and Bluefields (both on the east coast of Nicaragua) should you find yourself in or nearby either of these locations.

There have also been talks to start running flights from San Jose, Costa Rica in the future but nothing has come to fruition yet.
