Top 3 Gay Cities in Germany

Germany is notorious for being one of the most open and gay friendly countries in Europe.

Like many countries in Europe, Germany has a troubled past when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights but now easily can class itself as one of the most gay friendly destinations worldwide.

Same ടex marriage has been legal since 2017, same-ടex couples have full adoption rights, there are strong discrimination protections and transgender people can legally change their gender without surgery. [no_toc]

From the vibrant and diverse gay scenes that you will find in its main cities, to the welcoming attitude of the people, you can feel at home here.

We have been lucky enough to spend time in some of Germanys biggest and gayest cities, including celebrating pride (aka Christopher Street Day) in two of the 3 gay German cities in this list.

Top 3 Gay Cities in Germany

Berlin – The Hedonistic Capital

An iconic spot on the Berlin Wall.

Three words to describe our visit to Berlin – liberating, insane and gay; so very gay! Berlin probably eats other gay cities for breakfast!

There is an attitude of open mindedness across Berlin that seems to be embedded into its culture. People don’t seem to care if you are different and we really felt a sense of ‘anything goes’ and ‘you do you’.

Not only that, but it is a beautiful city, steeped in history and activities to keep you entertained all weekend unless the nightlife takes you first.

Berlin has a wealth of gay nightlife, from casual bars to huge clubs and more cruising clubs that you could shake a stick at.

Whilst every accommodation will be gay friendly, there are plenty of hotels that categorise themselves as outright gay hotels where we are sure you will have a lot of fun (see below).

We have been to Berlin a few times and on our last visit were able to experience Berlin Pride! It was huge and the streets were full of thousands of people celebrating, if you can time your visit to coincide with pride we highly recommend it!

Hamburg

After our time in Berlin we headed straight to Hamburg and found that it was also a worthy contender for the gayest city in Germany!

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany, after Berlin.

We soon realised that whilst not having the same wide-spread reputation as Berlin, Hamburg is just as supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, and still has a vibrant and diverse gay-scene.

We had no idea it offers one of the biggest and best Pride parades, with over 15,000 participants, plus spectators! The party never stopped!

If you are looking for the gay scene head to the St.Georg district, where the majority of gay bars, clubs and even a couple of saunas are located.

Gay scene aside,  just like Berlin, there is a lot to do and see during your time here including visiting the Elbphilharmonie Plaza, exploring the harbour and other famous attractions.
