Best Gay Cities in the USA: 10 Gayest Destinations You Need to Visit🏳️‍🌈

Gay Friendly Cities in the USA: Looking for the best gay cities in the USA? From iconic cities like New York City and San Francisco, to beach hotspots like Miami, the USA has a lot of gay-friendly cities to visit.

In this guide, I’ll share the best gay cities in the USA based on my personal experience. I have based my choices on the laws and rights of the destination, the gay scene, the size of the local LGBTQ+ population, gay events taking place annually- but most of all, how comfortable and safe I felt there!

But let’s be clear, travelling to the USA as an LGBTQ+ person can be a challenge. The USA is huge, the LGBTQ+ rights and legal protections vary massively from state to state, which can have an impact on the experience of travelling as an LGBTQ+ person.

It’s sad to say that there are still a number of states that have anti-LGBTQ+ laws in place, in particular around trans rights, as well as regions that have more conservative attitudes, and pockets of homophobia.

That being said, there are also a huge number of places within the USA that are extremely welcoming to LGBTQ+ travellers, and many gay friendly cities and states in the USA that are known for their inclusive policies and anti-discrimination protections.

I have been fortunate in that all of my previous visits to the USA have been to places where I have felt welcomed, accepted, and safe travelling as an openly gay person.

These are cities that I have personally travelled to during my visits to the USA as a gay man. It is worth noting that travelling as a cisgender gay man also comes with privileges which is why I always encourage you to follow a wide range of travel bloggers from the LGBTQ+ family.

Gay New York City- New York

gay cities USA

New York City – the city that never sleeps, the Big Apple. Whichever nickname you wish to call it, New York City is without a doubt one of the greatest gay cities on Earth!

With its deep-rooted gay history, a vibrant and diverse queer community that has chosen to make New York their home, a thriving gay scene, one of the largest Pride celebrations in the world, as well as some of the most iconic sights and attractions, it is little wonder that millions upon millions of people visit each year, amongst them a high percentage of LGBTQ+ travellers.

I have been to New York on at least five occasions, and each time I am more and more wowed, as well as left wanting more.

The LGBTQ+ residents of New York City make up the largest LGBTQ+ community in the United States – and by a significant margin too! In a recent survey, the New York metropolitan area has an estimated 756,000 LGBTQ+ residents, amongst them the largest transgender population in the United States.

There are a number of gay neighbourhoods within New York City – Greenwich Village, Chelsea, Hell’s Kitchen are just a few that have all developed a significant LGBTQ+ presence. Each is home to its own community, and gay bars, clubs and queer-owned businesses can be found across all the gayborhoods.

Of course, New York’s important role in LGBTQ+ history has also played a significant part in establishing it as the gay metropolis it is so known for today. New York City is known as the birthplace of the gay rights movement – following the Stonewall Uprising, or the Stonewall Riots of 1969.

The riots took place following a raid on the now iconic Stonewall Inn; the latest in a series of raids on New York’s gay bars. Instead of routinely complying as they had previously done, patrons and a growing crowd of supporters decided to finally fight back – and the rioting that followed has gone down as one of the most important events in gay history.

To this day, the Stonewall Inn still stands at 51 and 53 Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, and visiting and having a drink at the Stonewall Inn is almost viewed as a rite of passage for many gay travellers to New York City.

Despite there not being any exclusively gay hotels in New York, or hotels that class themselves as a ‘gay-hotel’, I have stayed in various hotels during my multiple visits, and I have always been welcomed with open arms as a gay traveller. Read my guide to some of the best gay-friendly hotels in New York.

Of course, a city as large as New York with such a thriving community, is also going to play host to one of the largest pride celebrations anywhere in the world, taking place in June each year. There are actually celebrations and festivities taking place throughout the entire month of June in New York, before culminating with the parade itself, which usually falls on the final weekend. New York City even played host to World Pride in 2019 – when a staggering 5 million people took part over the final weekend, with an incredible 4 million people attending the parade.

And once you have partied at pride, or paid your respects at Stonewall Inn, it’s probably time to do some sightseeing – and you are certainly not going to struggle to fill your time! Every time I return to New York I discover something new and exciting to see and do – it really is an ever-changing place!

Check out my full LGBTQ+ travel guide to New York here, with recommendations of my favourite gay bars, the various gayborhoods, gay-friendly hotel recommendations, as well as my personal favourite things to do in New York.

Hopefully this will help with planning your own trip to this amazing gay metropolis!

Gay San Francisco – California

gay USA city

Without a doubt, San Francisco has to be the most gay-friendly city in the USA that I have travelled to – so far at least!

San Francisco is known as the ‘original gay-friendly city’ and I definitely found this to be the case when I visited. The LGBTQ+ community in San Francisco is one of the largest in the United States, with countless LGBTQ+ people choosing to make this city their home. In fact, almost one in every six people living in San Francisco identify as LGBTQ+. That’s nearly 15% of the city’s population!

This warm and welcoming vibe is extended to the countless gay travellers that visit each year, and the gay-friendly attitude, just like the LGBTQ+ community, is found all over the city.

San Francisco even has its own gayborhood, the Castro district, home to the city’s largest gay community. The Castro is a tourist hotspot, with plenty of queer-owned businesses such as bookstores, cafes and brunch spots to explore during the day, before the district comes alive at night thanks to the countless gay bars and clubs found here. I highly recommend checking out bars such as Midnight Sun, one of San Francisco’s oldest gay bars, and Beaux – the main gay club to close down your night.

There is no shortage of places to stay in San Francisco either, with both gay and gay-friendly hotels found scattered across the city. The Castro will naturally be the main choice for most gay travellers, where the gorgeous boutique Hotel Castro is located, each room uniquely decorated inspired by LGBTQ+ heroes both past and present. Other areas of interest to stay are the Union Square district, renowned for its high-end shopping, and Fisherman’s Wharf – a tourist hotspot thanks to the various attractions found here.

Check out my guide to the best gay friendly hotels in San Francisco.

When it comes to gay events, no city does it quite like San Francisco, with a calendar full of gay events to keep the LGBTQ+ community satisfied year-round. Notable events include San Francisco Pride – one of the oldest pride celebrations in the world, the Castro Street Fair, Dore Alley Fair and Folsom.

And for the tourists and holidaymakers, with iconic attractions such as Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 to visit, there is plenty to keep everyone occupied.

As far as I’m concerned, San Francisco truly deserves its status as the most gay-friendly city in the US – check it out for yourself and let me know what you think.

Gay Chicago – Illinois

gay friendly cities usa

Talk about a new destination taking me by surprise – Chicago certainly did that!

I knew next to nothing before I visited, and I certainly wasn’t expecting to find such a gay-friendly city. But Chicago impressed me so much. The city itself is beautiful, hardly surprising when I found it is known as the birthplace of modern architecture! The people I met were warm, welcoming and super-friendly, there was plenty to keep me occupied as a tourist – and, I soon realised, the city is home to an incredibly diverse and thriving gay scene!

During my five days in the city, I felt very safe and at ease as an openly gay person.

Chicago has two very distinct gay neighbourhoods: Northalsted, previously known as Boystown (the name was changed to promote inclusion, although locals will definitely still refer to it as Boystown), and Andersonville.

Northalsted is the primary gayborhood – and a fun fact, it is the oldest officially recognised gay neighbourhood in the whole of the United States. The district is lined with rainbows, both flying high and on street crossings, and is renowned for its welcoming vibe, nonstop nightlife and multiple LGBTQ+ businesses.

The second major gayborhood, Andersonville, is smaller than Northalsted but still has a large LGBTQ+ community living here. The neighbourhood also boasts many queer-owned businesses, from trendy cafes and restaurants to quirky boutique stores.

And once I have finished my shopping and fancy a night on the town, I will have my fair share of options to choose from across both neighbourhoods; check out my guide to some of the best Chicago gay bars located in both Northalsted and Andersonville here.

Each year Chicago plays host to a huge pride celebration, Gay Pride Fest Chicago, a full-on week’s worth of celebrations leading up to the main parade at the weekend. I had an incredible time attending Chicago Pride, and marching in the parade alongside Chicago White Sox. There was an incredible turnout – it really felt like the entire city came out to lend their support to the community. Some Chicago pride parades have even been attended by up to one million spectators!

And as if pride wasn’t enough, each August Chicago holds Northalsted Market Days – the largest street festival in the Midwest. Market Days is a weekend-long live music street festival, made up of five stages, 250+ street vendors, drag performances and more – and for the circuit queens amongst us, (yes, I include myself in that bracket!) there are various circuit events to choose from over the course of the weekend.

Whilst most gay travellers will choose to stay in either Northalsted or Andersonville, and there are a good few options to choose from in these districts, I was welcomed as a gay tourist with open arms regardless of where in the city I chose to stay, or which hotel I chose to stay at. I stayed at the Kimpton Gray, a brand I love because of their continued support to the LGBTQ+ community. I have also created a gay hotels in Chicago guide to help you choose.

Chicago really does tick all the boxes when it comes to a gay-friendly travel destination – and I always love it when a city not only meets but also exceeds all of my expectations.

For everything you need to know about Chicago, read my in depth Gay Chicago Travel Guide.

Gay Miami – Florida

gay cities usa

I have been travelling to Miami every year now for the past 6 years, it is the embarkation port for my annual Atlantis gay cruise, and I always spend a couple of days either side of the cruise.

I quickly realised during my first visit that Miami was welcoming to LGBTQ+ travellers, but it wasn’t until my most recent visit when I actually spent a full week exploring further that I realised just how gay-friendly Miami was.

Miami is up there with the likes of LA and New York City for having one of the largest and most prominent LGBTQ+ communities in the United States. And tourism statistics report that out of the 20 million visitors that visit Miami on average each year, over 1 million of those are LGBTQ+ visitors. Fair to say, Miami has become known as a bit of a gay mecca!

The local LGBTQ+ community even has their own chamber of commerce – Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (MDGLCC), one of the few places in the world to offer this.

Whilst the greater Miami area, and more specifically Miami Beach as a whole, are both gay-friendly, it is the South Beach district in Miami Beach that is the heart of the LGBTQ+ scene. Home to two popular gay hotels, the vast majority of Miami’s gay nightlife, and even a popular gay beach, it is not uncommon at all to see fellow LGBTQ+ travellers and locals holding hands with their partners, something that always puts me at ease and makes me feel comfortable to do the same.

There are many gay and gay-friendly hotels across the Greater Miami area to choose from, so much so that I wrote a dedicated post listing my top recommendations. But if I opt to stay in the buzzing South Beach area, and I highly recommend that I do, then I would take a look at Hotel Gaythering (read my guide to the best gay hotels in Miami).

When it comes to gay nightlife, Miami is something of a hotspot. Whether I am looking for a boozy drag brunch, a small bar to have a quiet drink with friends, or if like me, I always want to dance the night away, Miami’s vibrant gay scene has something to suit everyone.

And no visit to Miami is complete without a trip to Palace Bar and Restaurant for drag brunch, home to possibly THE BEST drag show I have seen — it is ranked as the #1 drag bar in Miami for a reason! This iconic gay bar on Ocean Drive is open for brunch, lunch and dinner, all accompanied with a big side of drag — but it is their drag brunch that I highly recommend.

And once my wild party weekend in Miami is over, and it’s time to kick back and relax, I grab my favourite pair of speedos and head to the popular gay beach located at 12th Street. Pretty easy to find — just look for the rainbow lifeguard tower!

It’s easy to see why I have fallen in love with this very gay-friendly city, and why I rank it as one of the top gay-friendly cities in the US. For everything you need to know, read my complete Gay Miami Travel Guide.

Gay Los Angeles – California

Los Angeles has a reputation known around the world. Who hasn’t heard of the city home to the iconic Hollywood Sign, Beverley Hills or the Walk of Fame to name just a few of the iconic attractions?

The second most-densely populated city in the United States, second only to New York – another city that has made my list! – it is also home to one of the largest and most established LGBTQ+ communities in the United States – the majority of which are based in West Hollywood.

West Hollywood, more commonly known as WeHo, is more than just a gayborhood. WeHo is actually an autonomous city, and with nearly 40% of its residents identifying as members of the queer community, WeHo is the gayest city on the planet!

Little wonder then, given the size of the community that has chosen to make WeHo their home, that this is where the highest concentration of gay bars and gay clubs is found. The iconic Abbey, and its sister bar next door The Chapel are staples of the LA gay scene – known as the ‘most famous gay bar in the world!’ thanks to MTV. Walking around WeHo, I came across many other LGBTQ+ owned businesses, such as cafes, brunch spots, restaurants and bookstores.

There are a few other gay bars located in downtown Los Angeles too, such as The Eagle LA, a firm favourite amongst the leather and f€tish community.

A city as large as Los Angeles with such a thriving queer community also plays host to various gay events and parties spread throughout the year. If celebrating Pride in LA, I actually have the choice of two – as West Hollywood hosts its own pride celebrations separate to that of the city of LA itself. Both pride celebrations are held consecutive weeks, usually at the start of June.

There are also multiple circuit parties throughout the year too – with GPS and Masterbeat being the two most frequented – expect special editions of these parties to take place during LA pride weekend!

When it comes to choosing a place to stay in LA, given the sheer size of the city, it is all about location, location, location. A lot of gay travellers will of course choose to stay in West Hollywood, whereas others may wish to stay closer to some of the iconic attractions they plan to visit. My recommendation – base yourself where you wish to spend most of your time to avoid unnecessary travelling! And to help, I have put together a guide of the best gay-friendly hotels in LA.

I have visited Los Angeles twice now, and both times been struck by how welcoming the city is to our community. I am already looking forward to the third visit! For more on what this amazing city has to offer to gay travellers, check out my full gay Los Angeles travel guide here.

Gay Wilton Manors – Florida

Wilton Manors is known as the go-to gayborhood within Florida – up there rivalling Miami!

Wilton Manors is located just on the outskirts of downtown Fort Lauderdale, which in itself is somewhat of a gay capital. But despite its small size, with a population of around 11,000 residents, it has become somewhat of a mini gay utopia, thanks in large part to its high concentration of LGBTQ+ residents.

Wilton Manors is the beating gay heart of Fort Lauderdale – it reminds me a lot of West Hollywood in that regard – in that, rather than being a gayborhood, it is more of a gay city in its own right. Wilton Manors has a huge number of gay owned businesses; bars, clubs, restaurants, cafes, boutique stores and a LOT of gay guesthouses, some of which may even be clothing optional!

I even stayed at one of the gay-owned guesthouses myself when I visited, the beautiful Wilton River Suites – where I could quite happily have moved into! But there are so many great choices, I have compiled a list of gay hotels in Wilton Manors.

The nightlife scene in Wilton Manors is thriving, with dozens of gay bars, all offering something different to suit the various LGBTQ+ travellers that pass through each week, many of whom are boarding one of the cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale.

Rosie’s Bar and Grill is a staple – a burger joint with a very extensive cocktail menu. Rosie’s is also famous for their Sunday brunch menu – expect hordes of gay travellers brunching before heading off to catch their cruise.

And for those wanting something a little livelier, Hunters is one of the main gay clubs in Wilton Manors, as is the Manor – known for being the place to go when everywhere else is closed. And of course, like any other ‘gay city’ Wilton Manors does of course have its very own Eagle Bar. Read my guide to gay bars in Wilton Manors.

Wilton Manors doesn’t have its own gay beach as such, being located inland, but is only located around a 15 minutes’ drive from the gay beaches of Fort Lauderdale, such as Sebastien Street.

And of course, you can’t expect a gay city not to have an annual calendar of gay events throughout the year, including Pride. Fort Lauderdale actually offers two pride celebrations each year – their own pride taking place in February each year, followed by Wilton Manors Stonewall Pride, occurring in June.

As you can see, for a relatively small area, Wilton Manors has a lot to offer gay travellers, as well as its long-standing gay community. Read my Complete Gay Travel Guide to Wilton Manors for more.

Gay Tampa Bay – Florida

Tampa Bay took me by surprise. This is a great gay-friendly destination in Florida which is really doing the work to make sure that LGBTQ+ travellers are welcome.

The gay scene in Tampa is centred around Ybor and there are some great gay bars to visit, as well as some queer friendly cafes in the area.

Beyond the gay scene, Tampa is a very relaxed and beautiful place to visit. Read more in my complete Gay Tampa travel guide.

Gay San Juan – Puerto Rico

This might be my all time favorite gay destination in the US. Puerto Rico is a US territory and its capital of San Juan has so much to offer LGBTQ+ travellers.

The gay scene is San Juan is spread out across the barrio of Santurce where you will find the majority of gay bars and points of interest. Condado Beach in front of the gay hotel, The Tryst, is the place to be on Sunday for a gay beach day (find the gay beach in San Juan here) and then towards Ocean Park you will find more gay hotels including Coqui del Mar – read my guide to gay hotels in Puerto Rico.

For things to do in San Juan, visit Old San Juan, explore the beaches, visit and support one of the Manatee rescue centres and perhaps book a day trip from San Juan further afield to visit El Yunque.

In fact, the whole of Puerto Rico has a lot to offer gay travellers, from San Juan, to Boqueron to Vieques – read my complete Gay Puerto Rico Travel Guide to plan your trip.

Gay St Pete – Florida

Rivaling Miami for the gayest place in Florida, St Petes LGBTQ+ community make up a significant proportion of the population here.

The main street is full of LGBTQ+ owned businesses, from cute clothing stores, to cafes and then of course plenty of gay bars, a gay hotel (the Mari Jean hotel St Pete) and a gay beach nearby.

St Pete felt like a gay town, rather than a city with a gay scene. Read more in my full Gay St Pete Travel Guide.
