Gay Florida Travel Guide: Are there gay friendly destinations in Florida? Yes! There are many popular gay destinations in Florida, from iconic destinations like South Beach in Miami, to lesser known, but equally gay friendly spots like Ybor in Tampa and almost ‘fully gay’ cities like Wilton Manors.
However, we cannot ignore that fact that, on a state level, Florida has a lot of challenges for LGBTQ+ people.
The sentiment towards LGBTQ+ people through social attitudes in some areas, bills proposed, and in some cases, laws passed is concerning and understandably, can cause difficulty for local LGBTQ+ people and travellers alike. Equality Florida is a great resource to understand the impact of these bills/laws and the work locals are doing to push back.
That being said, Florida is home to many gay hotspots, where you can be yourself, out, loud and proud. There are large LGBTQ+ communities in many cities and well established gay scenes that will welcome you with open arms.
I have had many positive experiences, meeting local LGBTQ+ people and visiting the many queer owned businesses and spaces in the destinations mentioned in this article.
Please do note that I travel with privilege here as a white, cisgender gay man. Safety has to be the number one priority when you travel and it is important to consider that different parts of the community may have different challenges to consider.
So for those destinations in Florida that are doing the work to welcome LGBTQ+ travellers to Florida, and for the communities that live there and make these destinations extra special (and extra gay), I applaud you and can’t wait to return – let’s get into my list of the best gay destinations in Florida.

St Pete-Clearwater – Florida’s Most Welcoming Beach Destination
St Pete-Clearwater is one of the most popular gay destinations in Florida. What stands out about St Pete is how integrated the LGBTQ+ community is here, not just within the many queer-owned businesses and spaces, but you’ll also find plenty of other businesses proudly flying the pride flag to let you know you are welcome here.
The main gay area of St Pete is found in the Grand Central District, this is where you will find the majority of gay bars and queer owned businesses.

St-Pete is often considered to be one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destination in Florida, and a great choice for first time visitors.

Tampa – Explore the gay scene in GaYbor
Tampa is perhaps one of the more underrated gay friendly destinations in Florida. Just a short distance from St Pete, and easily accessible as you will fly into Tampa airport, Tampa has a lot to offer gay travellers and pairs well for a couple of nights if you are planning to visit St Pete.
I found Tampa to be a very friendly and welcoming destination, with a gay scene that surprised me. The gay scene in Tampa can be found in Ybor, affectionately called GaYbor. Here you will find some very friendly gay bars with great drag shows and good vibes.
Tampa has had a complicated few years with Pride, I was able to attend their most recent pride and it was great to see how well attended the parade was by locals. However more recently, funding challenges have meant Tampa Pride has been put on hold – so if you spend some time in Tampa and can support the queer spaces it does have, it is more valuable than ever to do so.

Miami – Florida’s Gay Beach and Nightlife hotspot
Miami is one of the most well-known gay destinations in Florida. The key gay areas in Miami include South Beach in Miami Beach and the trendy arts district of Wynwood.
South Beach is one of my favorite gay hotspots in the US, the architecture, the vibe, the gay beach in Miami and outdoor living style is as iconic as you would expect.
To stay in Miami, it has to be Gaythering Hotel, also home to Bar Gaythering and the Gaythering Sauna. I have stayed here a couple of times and really enjoyed this spot as a solo traveller. There are many other gay friendly hotels in Miami you can check out for your visit if this is fully booked.
Miami is also home to one of the largest gay pride celebrations in Florida, and often recognised as one of the most popular gay travel destinations in the US.

Fort Lauderdale – For the Best Gay Resorts in Florida
So many people told me that I needed to visit Fort Lauderdale, it has the reputation as being one of the most popular gay cities in Florida with a thriving LGBTQ+ community, and now that I have visited twice, I can see why.
One thing that confuses a lot of travellers visiting the area, is that Fort Lauderdale and Wilton Manors are separate cities within Greater Fort Lauderdale. They are right next to each other (a 15 minute drive from Fort Lauderdale beach to Wilton Manors centre) so often people talk about them interchangeably.
Fort Lauderdale has a lot of gay resorts to choose from and is located right on the beach. I stayed at The Grand Resort & Spa, but you should also take a look at my extensive list of gay resorts in Fort Lauderdale to see what fits best for you.
Fort Lauderdale is particularly popular with LGBTQ+ travellers looking to stay near the beach and have a good number of gay resorts to choose from.

Wilton Manors – The Gayest City in Florida
Wilton Manors is the second gayest city in the whole of the US based on having the second highest LGBTQ+ population relative to the size of the local population (the first being Provincetown).
It is arguably the number one gay destination in Florida, because honestly, it is rare to see a straight couple here at all and it really does feel like a fully gay island – the city is surrounded by waterways and is in fact an island.
Walking through the centre of Wilton Manors, you will quickly realise that almost every business is queer themed or queer owned – from Cake Daddies bakery, to Rosies Grill and iconic bars like Eagle.

Key West – The Gay Hub of the Florida Keys
The final gay friendly place in Florida worth mentioning is Key West, the main gay hub on the Florida Keys.
