Gay Madrid: The Ultimate LGBTQ+ Travel Guide (2026)

Gay Madrid Travel Guide: Madrid is one of the most gay-friendly cities in Europe and one of Spain’s top gay travel destinations.

In this detailed gay Madrid travel guide, I will share the main gay areas in Madrid (Chueca), some of the most popular gay bars in Madrid, gay hotels, events including Madrid pride, the best gay saunas and everything you need to know to plan a gay trip to Madrid.

Madrid was one of the first places I travelled where I felt completely at ease being gay, free to kiss openly in the street with no one paying any attention, no looking over my shoulder or second guessing myself, and honestly the relief to feel like that is simply invaluable – it is perhaps no surprise that Madrid is one of the most popular gay travel destinations in Europe for this reason.

Spain in general has a number of very popular gay travel destinations, with Madrid being my personal favorite, make sure to also check out my gay travel guides to Valencia, Sitges, Torremolinos and Gran Canaria.

Let me get started with my complete gay travel guide to Madrid, to share everything that makes Madrid one of the best gay cities in Europe.

Is Madrid Gay Friendly? Everything LGBTQ+ Travellers Need to Know

gay madrid travel guide
Gay hotels Madrid

Yes, Madrid is one of the most gay friendly cities in Europe. The city has a large LGBTQ+ population and attracts many gay travellers year round. It is also home to the third largest gay pride celebration worldwide and the largest in Europe.

Madrid is somewhere where you can travel freely and openly, feeling at ease to be yourself. The city has a lot to offer gay travellers, and I will be sharing everything in this Gay Madrid travel guide.

More broadly, Spain was the third country in the world to legalise marriage equality in 2005 and discrimination protections run nationwide.

Chueca: The Gay Neighbourhood of Madrid

gay madrid travel guide

The main gay neighbourhood in Madrid is called Chueca. Chueca is a neighbourhood (barrio) in central Madrid making it very easy to access wherever you stay.

As the main LGBTQ+ district in Madrid, Chueca is where you will find the majority of gay bars in Madrid, gay themed shops, bookstores, cafes and it is of course a popular home for many of the local LGBTQ+ population.

To get to Chueca, you can either walk (the whole city is very walkable), or you can get the underground metro to Chueca station, which has rainbow painted walls – so if you are in any doubt whether you have arrived at the right station, it should quickly become very obvious.

That being said, there are of course other gay bars and spaces dotted around the city, making the city as a whole feel very gay.

For a more detailed look into Chueca and a mention of some other key gay areas in Madrid, read my mini guide to Chueca and other gay areas in Madrid.

Best Gay Bars in Madrid

Naturally, it makes sense to take a look at some of the best gay bars in Madrid now that you know where the gayborhood is.

Madrid is home to over 50 gay bars and clubs, with the majority being found in Chueca, the ideal place to go on a little bar crawl. Noting that of course everything is a little later in Spain so these bars will only start to get busy later on in the evening and for the clubs, you will want to arrive 1am/2am.

My personal favorite gay bars in Madrid that I suggest you start with include:

  • El 12 – this is a really nice gay bar in Madrid. With a more calm space upon entry for sitting and chatting, and then a dancefloor towards the back…a great place for a little of everything.
  • You & Me – consistently one of the most popular gay bars in Chueca, with good vibes, a cute crowd and a social atmosphere.
  • D’Mystic – is a slightly more upscale lounge/café bar with a chic décor and relaxed atmosphere. One for a casual drink or to start your night before moving on to a club.
  • Boyberry – they have small and social bar area upon entry, beyond the bar there are two floors of playful areas for you to explore.

For an extensive list of the best gay bars in Madrid, clubs, club nights and more gay nightlife in Madrid, read my Complete Guide to Gay Bars in Madrid.

Gay Clubs in Madrid

When it comes to gay clubs and gay club nights in Madrid, there is a whole spectrum from cute pop nights to clubs where the playful zone of the club is the largest part of the club itself!

Tanga!

gay bars in madrid tanga

I could safely say that this is one of my favourite gay nights out in Madrid ever and I highly recommend!

Each Tanga! night usually has a theme based on an artist (whether it’s Ariana, Christina or Mariah at Xmas) with a big production of gogo dancers, drag queens and performers.

Tanga! is at least one per month on a Sunday and hosted at Medias Puri. Because its Sunday the rules when it comes to timings change and people arrive at Tanga! from when the doors open around 8pm – if you arrive after 10:30pm expect a huge queue, this is a very popular night.

The night still goes on until 7am in the morning of course!

Strong Madrid: Strong the Club

For contrast, I have to recommend Strong Madrid and tell you to get your best outfit from Boxer at the ready.

Strong is a large gay club in the centre of Madrid, known for having a good size dancefloor and bar area – and then beyond the dancefloor, another space with many different rooms that is about three times bigger than the main dancefloor and bar area! Make sure to go and explore all of the club

Strong is known for a crazy, ‘playful’, night out in Madrid.

Other great gay club nights in Madrid I recommend from personal experience include Candy Party, Fuego and Churros con Chocolate – more details about these parties can be found in my Gay Madrid Bars and Club Nights guide.

Best Gay Hotels in Madrid: Where to Stay?

If you are looking for where to stay in Madrid, I would personally focus on which area (or barrio) you would like to stay in. Most LGBTQ+ travellers in Madrid want to stay in Chueca for access to the gayborhood, but of course there are plenty of gay friendly hotel recommendations all over the city.

Allow me to share the main gay hotel in Madrid below, and then a second recommendation in the heart of Chueca. For a list of the best recommendations for gay and gay friendly hotels in Madrid, read my Top Gay Hotels in Madrid Guide.

Axel Hotel Madrid

Axel Hotel Madrid is one of the most popular choices of hotel for gay travellers coming to Madrid and one of the only gay hotels around. For those that don’t know the brand, Axel Hotels market themselves towards LGBTQ+ travellers and describe themselves as ‘heterofriendly’.

They are a fun brand with some cheeky touches such as their ‘DO DISTURB’ signs to hang on your doors.

Axel Hotel Madrid is well located in the centre of the city, within walking distance to Chueca, has stylish rooms and a rooftop pool and bar, the perfect place to hang out.

Room Mate Oscar – Chueca

Madrid pride where to stay

There are a few of the Room Mate brand in Madrid, however Room Mate Oscar is in the very heart of the gayborhood of Chueca, making it a very popular choice for gay travellers as you can step out of the hotel and into a gay bar in seconds!

The hotel also has lovely rooftop area and is one of the few hotels in the city with a pool, a great place to start your evening as the sun goes down.

Gay Events in Madrid

gay madrid guide

Whether its is Madrid Pride, or big gay club nights, when it comes to gay events in Madrid you are in for a treat. Let’s start with the obvious one:

Madrid Pride (MADO) – July

Madrid Pride is the largest pride parade in Europe and one of the largest in the world! The cities population all but doubles during Madrid Pride and there is a full schedule of events and parties across the week.

In Chueca and around the city, you will find pop up stages with shows, performances, drag queens and singers each evening – these draw huge crowds and have a great vibe. Make sure not to miss the High-Heel Race on Calle Pelayo!

Of course all the bars are absolutely packed and the clubs will be hosting special pride nights.

In terms of the really big events and parties, WE Party Group runs huge events like Sundia at Fabrik – Fabrik is far out the city but buses are organised or you can share a taxi – either way it is 100% worth it, what a party and event! Other popular events this year included the sold out My Pleasure events, these were the more naughty ones so to speak.

And then of course, Madrid Pride parade on the Saturday late evening (from about 20:30 until midnight). The parade runs up Paseo del Prado and finishes up past the Palace of Cibeles.

Sleazy Madrid – May

Spain’s largest annual gay fet1sh party. Madrid has a lot to offer in that respect anytime of the year, but if this is the scene that you enjoy, then make sure to visit Madrid during Sleazy Madrid in May for 4 days of parties and events.

WE Pride Festival – July

This crosses over with Madrid Pride, WE Party Group puts on a full schedule of huge circuit parties during Madrid Pride.

Events are hosted at megaclub venues like La Riviera and Fabrik, with wristbands available for the full schedule of parties or you can buy individual tickets.

Highlights include Sundia and the Massive Main Party on Saturday, through to the Afterparty Sunday.

Mad.Bear – December

One for the bear crowd and their admirers, Mad.bear usually runs early December with a weeklong schedule of events.

Is there a Gay Pool in Madrid?

There isn’t an ‘exclusively’ gay pool in Madrid, however there is a certain pool that is very popular with the local gay community.

Piscina de Lago – Casa de Campo

Is Piscina Lago a gay pool in Madrid? It is not an exclusively gay pool, but it is very popular with the gay community in Madrid.

This is an extremely popular hangout for the LGBTQ+ community of Madrid, especially during the summer months when temperatures soar.

Piscina de Lago is a large outdoor municipal swimming pool, part of the Casa de Campo Sports Center. It is located a little way out of the city centre, but still easily reached by metro (10 minutes on the metro from the centre).

I spent a lot of time here during the summer I lived in Madrid and I quickly noticed that it was a popular choice with the local gay community – specifically you will want to head to the top pool, that is known as being the main spot for the gays.

Seeing as temperatures are usually between 30-40°C during July/August, you can imagine how busy and popular the communal pools can get – and Lago is certainly the go-to for gays!

Gay Shops in Madrid: LGBTQ+ Shopping Guide

Madrid is home to many gay shops and even has its own queer bookstore in the heart of Chueca. Some of my personal favorite gay shops in Madrid when I visited recently include:

  • Addicted/ES Collection store – for me, Addicted does the best range of swimwear, all made in Spain, and their wider collection of swimwear, underwear, sportswear and casualwear is also great.
  • Omohonia Madrid – Omohonia is where you need to go for unique, vibrant and outthere pride and party outfits. They have some really cool pieces that you simply won’t find anywhere else.
  • Berkana Bookstore – go and grab yourself some queer literature at Berkana bookstore to take with you to relax by the pool or in Retiro Park.

For even more gay themed shops in Madrid, read my Guide to the best Gay Shops in Madrid.

Best Gay Saunas in Madrid

There are many gay saunas in Madrid, with the two most popular being Sauna Paraiso and Sauna Beach. Below is a summary of the most popular gay saunas in Madrid, followed by a more detailed description of each and what they offer.

Sauna NameBest For
Sauna ParaísoMost popular overall
Sauna BeachSauna and dance option
Sauna Center24-hour option
Sauna OctopusBears and a mature crowd

Sauna Paraíso

Sauna Paraiso is one of the most popular gay saunas in Madrid, with a mix of locals and tourists and a younger/party crowd of guys in their 20s-50s.

The venue is a good size, with social bar areas, one of the larger pools vs other saunas as well as the usual steam rooms and saunas.

Opening hours: Open 24 hours from Friday through Monday; Tuesday–Thursday 10:00am–12:00am.

Address: C. del Norte, 15, 28015 Madrid

Sauna Beach

A unique gay sauna in Madrid, given that it has its own clubroom with DJ. So you can be playing in the sauna one moment, and then dancing in your towel in the clubroom the next.

Similar crowd to Sauna Paraiso and known for being one of the largest gay saunas in Madrid.

Opening hours: Tuesday–Wednesday 10:00am–12:00am; Thursday–Monday open continuously.

Address: Cuesta de Santo Domingo, 1, 28013 Madrid

Sauna Center

Sauna Center is open 24 hours a day, so it is ready to go whenever you are. Popular with locals due to it’s opening hours being convenient, and its proximity to Chueca – more of a wider age range found here vs the first two.

Opening hours: Open 24 hours every day.

Address: C. de Valverde, 32, 28004 Madrid

Sauna Octopus

One for the bears, cubs and admirers, typically this sauna has a more mature crowd and laid back atmosphere.

Opening hours: Daily 10:00am–12:00am.

Address: C. de Churruca, 10, 28004 Madrid

There are even more gay saunas in Madrid including Sauna Lavapiés, Sauna Puerta de Toledo and Sauna Cruising – but realistically if you are here for a fun weekend in Madrid, I would focus on Paraiso and Sauna Beach.

Gay Map of Madrid: All Gay Bars, Hotels & Locations

To get a sense of where everything gay in Madrid is, take a look at this gay map of Madrid to get your bearings:

Where to eat in Madrid?

Madrid is full of incredible restaurants and places to eat, personally I really enjoy finding the unassuming local spots that you might otherwise miss as a tourist.

Take a look at some of these places to eat on your next visit to Madrid:

  • Refra – cute local spot for drinks that come with free tapa, or of course order more from the menu, make sure to order the cod (bacalao) croquetas. You are likely to be the only tourist here.
  • Taberna De Ramales – great for pinchos and conveniently located near the palace.
  • Bosco de Lobos – a very cute spot with some great italian options, a little more upscale and calm escape from the surrounding Chueca bustle.
  • San Gines – an iconic place for churros con chocolate, noted as one of the best places in Spain for them!
  • NAP – my favorite pizza place in Madrid, they have a few locations dotted around the city.

For even more Tapas places to eat, read my Madrid Tapas Tour Guide.

What to do in Madrid for Gay Travellers?

Madrid is a beautiful city, one I encourage you to simply get lost in and wander around, picking up a drink or some tapas along the way.

Some of the best things to do in Madrid include:

Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol translates to gate of the sun and if you take a look on google maps, you will see that it is purposefully designed to be in the shape of a rising sun and each street runs off as a ray of light!

Here you will also find kilometre zero (kilometro cero), a small stone slab marking the geographical centre of Spain and the point from which all roads are measured from. There will be lots of tourists crowding around taking selfies!

Gran Via

Gran via Madrid 2 Day Itinerary, Weekend in Madrid!

Explore the main high street, Gran Via. This is where all the major shopping centre and hotels can be found so take some time to walk along and see what is on offer.

At the east end of Gran Via you will also find the Metropolis building, this was previously an insurance building specialising in fire insurance and you should be able to make out the roof as a fireman’s helmet.

Plaza Major

Plaza Major has changed a lot over the centuries. It has been a marketplace, the place for public theatre, a car park and more recently it was covered in grass one summer to become a park.

It is also where you will find the main tourism office if you need any help from them.

The Plaza is surrounded by restaurants which are lovely but quite pricey relative to elsewhere in the city.

Royal Palace of Madrid

The Royal Palace of Madrid is open to the public to visit and is the largest palace (in floor area) in Europe!

The palace has a lot of interesting and intriguing history and is very lavish inside.

The cost is €13 to enter or it is free Monday to Thursday from 4.00pm to 6.00pm (October to March) and 6.00pm to 8.00pm (April to September) for EU citizens with proof of ID.

Temple of Debod

2 days in madrid visit temple of debod

Head back past the Royal Palace of Madrid and north towards the Temple of Debod.

This is considered to be the best place to watch sunset in Madrid if you time it correctly.

The temple itself is an Egyptian temple gifted to Madrid in 1968 and has been rebuilt on top of a hill surrounded by parkland.

Retiro Park

This is a beautiful park with it’s own boating lake, rivers, bridges, a glass palace and plenty of huge open areas to sunbathe in summer.

You can spend some time exploring the park yourself and perhaps take some food along with you so that you can have a picnic for lunch.

Look out for the Fountain of the Fallen Angel, one of the only public monuments of the devil himself and it just so happens to sit at 666 metres above sea level.

Cibeles Palace

palace of cibeles madrid 2 day itinerary

This is one of the most pristine and beautiful buildings in Madrid.

It stands over the fountain of Cibeles, one of three Greek gods that lines Paseo del Prado.

You can go inside for free and also pay a small fee to gain access to the top level which has some of the best views of Madrid.

Mercado de San Miguel

Mercado de San Miguel is a food market which is incredibly popular with tourists.

Everything is beautifully presented, with a great variety on offer. However the prices are on the high end compared to heading to the local spots for tapas.

Either way, I would still suggest you take a walk through and experience the market.

Free Walking Tours

Free walking tours are a really great way to see and learn a lot in a short space of time.

The free concept is confusing for some, but basically the tour guide does not get paid and their wage is exclusively from what you pay at the end. It is a hard job so for a 3 hour tour I suggest €10 per person is more than fair.

How to get around Madrid?

The majority of Madrid and all its main attractions are walkable. You can cross the main part of the city from the palace to Retiro Park in about 30-40 minutes.

If you do not want to walk then there are plenty of Ubers available, these are very cheap given the distances are short.

Finally, you also have the metro under and over ground system. You can buy individual tickets for journeys or buy passes for the day/week etc.

To go further out of the city (e.g the airport) you are best to use the train (not the metro). The train machines can be identified by the name of the rail company ‘Renfe’.

Practical Tips for your weekend in Madrid

Here are some practical tips for your weekend in Madrid:

  • Learn some Spanish and have Google translate at the ready
  • The currency is the euro
  • Change your money before you come, there are some currency exchange places known for running scams so it is better to be safe than sorry.
  • Like most cities, watch out for pickpockets in the city centre. Madrid is not as bad as Barcelona but it’s worth being aware.
  • In summer Madrid is extremely hot and in winter seriously cold – pack accordingly!
  • There are water fountains around the city which are safe to drink from (as is tap water).
  • When looking for accommodation, remember Puerta del Sol is the centre point as a reference for distances.
  • The people here eat late compared to the likes of the UK and US for example. A normal dinner time is 10pm so many restaurants in the evening only open from 8pm.
  • Equally nightlife is much later, clubs often open from 1am.
